In an unsettling turn, Eminem has become the victim of theft as former sound engineer Joseph Strange faces federal charges for allegedly stealing and selling the iconic Detroit rapper’s unreleased tracks. Strange, 46, of Holly, Michigan, was charged with criminal copyright infringement and interstate transportation of stolen property.

The FBI initiated its investigation after receiving tips from Eminem’s studio employees who discovered leaked tracks online, including the diss track “Smack You.” Investigators traced these unauthorized releases directly back to Strange, who worked closely with Eminem from 2007 until 2021.

Prosecutors allege that Strange accessed protected, secure studio hard drives and sold the stolen music for approximately $50,000 to various buyers, including an individual known as “Doja Rat” from Ontario, Canada. This group reportedly used Bitcoin transactions to purchase the music over several months.

Eminem’s longtime spokesperson, Dennis Dennehy, publicly condemned the leak, stating, “These leaked songs were studio efforts never meant for public consumption—demos, experiments, and ideas dated and not relevant so many years later.”

Authorities found further incriminating evidence, including original handwritten lyrics and thousands of audio files, during a raid of Strange’s home. If convicted, Strange could face significant prison time and hefty fines.
