Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team is challenging the authenticity of the CNN-released hotel surveillance video, arguing that the network altered, manipulated, and later destroyed the original footage to unfairly incriminate the mogul.
The video, which aired in May 2024, captured Combs physically assaulting ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura at a Los Angeles hotel in March 2016—matching the allegations Ventura made in her November 2023 lawsuit, which was later settled.
Diddy’s Lawyers: “The Footage Was Altered”
On March 13, Combs’ attorneys submitted a new legal filing stating that CNN:
Bought the only known copy of the security footage Used editing software to modify timestamps and video speed Destroyed the original recording after airing their report
“The CNN videos do not fairly and accurately depict the events in question,” his legal team claimed, alleging that the video was sped up to make the altercation appear more aggressive.
CNN Responds: “The Video Was Never Altered”
CNN has denied all allegations, insisting that the original footage was not destroyed and remains intact with the original source.
“CNN never altered the video and did not destroy the original copy of the footage,” a network spokesperson confirmed.
Meanwhile, Cassie’s attorney, Douglas H. Wigdor, dismissed Combs’ claims as a desperate legal tactic to keep the video from being used in court.
“I am confident the video fairly and accurately represents what happened, will be admitted into evidence, and that Combs will be held accountable for his depravity,” Wigdor stated.

The video’s admissibility is now a critical point in Combs’ federal trial, where prosecutors aim to introduce it as evidence.
Diddy, currently incarcerated at MDC-Brooklyn, is facing racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges, with his trial set to begin on May 5.
