Despite serving decades behind bars for federal sex trafficking and child pornography charges, R. Kelly is still writing music—lots of it.
In a rare interview on the Inmate Tea with A&P podcast, the disgraced singer revealed that he has written 25 albums while incarcerated and remains deeply connected to his craft.
“Singing is a beautiful disease that’s incurable,” Kelly said. “I don’t care where I’m at, I’m always singing, I’m always writing.”
During the interview, Kelly even serenaded the hosts, April and Patricia, with a cappella renditions of his songs “When a Woman’s Fed Up” and “Step in the Name of Love”, proving that even in prison, his voice and musical drive remain intact.
Can His Music Ever Be Separated From His Legacy?
R. Kelly’s convictions and scandals have overshadowed his career, leaving his musical legacy in a complicated position. His impact on R&B is undeniable, but his crimes have left many unable—or unwilling—to separate the art from the artist.
Even with 25 albums worth of unreleased music, the question remains: will the world ever hear them? And if so, should they?
For now, Kelly remains behind bars, writing, and singing, with no official word on whether these songs will ever see the light of day.
