Will Smith just dropped a story that has the internet buzzing. In a recent interview on the Broken Record podcast, the actor and music icon revealed that he spoke with both The Notorious B.I.G. and Prince just hours before their untimely deaths—coincidences so eerie that Smith jokes he doesn’t want any more late-night calls.
“I met Biggie four hours before he got killed, and I talked to Prince eight hours before he died,” Smith said, adding, “I don’t know what that says about me. I’m like, ‘Oh, no. Don’t call me.’”
BIGGIE: A FIRST & LAST MEETING
Smith’s encounter with Biggie happened on March 9, 1997—the same night the Brooklyn rapper was tragically gunned down in Los Angeles. It was the first time the two had met, and the loss still weighs heavily on Smith.
“The Biggie one made me cry, ’cause it was stupid, and it was just centered on hip-hop—for rapping,” Smith shared. “That one hurt me. It scared me too.”
PRINCE: A BUSINESS VENTURE THAT NEVER HAPPENED
As for Prince, their final conversation was about more than music—it was about building a business empire. According to Smith, the legendary artist called him to pitch an idea that involved both Jay-Z and himself teaming up to start an entertainment company.
“He said that me, him, and Jay-Z should start an entertainment company and that he had already talked to Jay,” Smith recalled. “We talked that night, and in the morning, he was gone.”
The sudden loss left Smith rattled, turning what could have been a groundbreaking partnership into a haunting memory.
TOO $HORT’S UNEXPECTED FAVORITE
Smith also shared a lighter moment involving West Coast rap legend Too $hort, who surprised him with his favorite DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince track: “You Saw My Blinker”—a deep cut about a fender bender gone wrong.
“When we went to Oakland, Too $hort was like, ‘That’s the one, you’ll never make nothin’ better than that,’” Smith laughed, mimicking the rapper’s signature drawl.
KMOB1003’S TAKE:
Two icons. Two final conversations. One wild coincidence. Whether you believe in fate or just chalk it up to timing, Will Smith’s story is a reminder of how fleeting life can be. And let’s be honest—the idea of Prince, Jay-Z, and Will Smith joining forces? That would’ve changed the game.
We wish Will the best with his highs and lows and hope he’s always getting the support he needs.
