Sony has apologised after its PlayStation Network went offline for 24 hours, leaving users unable to play a majority of their games.

In 2024, it was reported that more than 116million had signed up to the PlayStation Network, which allows gamers to play online, purchase digital titles and utilise a number of social features.

However, the PSN service went offline on Friday evening (February 7) and didn’t come back online until Saturday. It meant users couldn’t play multiplayer games online but it also stopped them from accessing single-player titles that require a PSN account to work.

In 2011, the PlayStation Network went offline for several weeks after it was attacked by hackers. This weekend’s outage was the longest since that downtime but Sony has announced the issue was caused by “operational issues” this time around.

On Sunday morning (February 9), they confirmed things had been fixed. “Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience,” Sony wrote on social media, and told fans they would receive five additional days of PSN membership as compensation.

However some fans aren’t impressed by the compensation being offered by Sony. “Not good enough,” wrote one fan.

“Additional five days of service??? Wow so generous,” said another. Others have complained the extra five days will mess up scheduled payments or renewals set to coincide with annual sales, while those users who don’t subscribe to the PSN but were still affected by the outages won’t receive anything.

“Less interested in five free days. More interested in what exactly happened, how it happened, why there was no communication during the outage, and what’s being done to prevent it from happening again in the future,” wrote one fan, with the 2011 hack resulting in leaked personal data.

Users who had access to the Monster Hunter Wilds beta have also been told they may get an additional test at some point before the game launches at the end of the month.

“PS5 hunters, thanks for your patience and understanding during this weekend’s PSN service issues. To account for reduced play time due to the outage, we are considering running [a test] for an additional 24 hours at a future date. Exact details and timing are TBD, so please stay tuned,” said Capcom.

In other news, it’s been suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6 could be getting a Switch 2 release.
