Quentin Tarantino has offered an update on his 10th and final film, revealing he plans to wait until his children are old enough to have memories of being on one of his movie sets. He also talked about a play that would likely be his next project.
The celebrated director, whose last film was 2019’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, flew from his home in Israel to the Sundance Film Festival in Utah to attend an on-stage interview on Monday (January 28). When asked about his planned last project, the film-maker said he’s waiting on his children to be older so that they can join him on set.
“I’m in no hurry to actually jump into production” he revealed. “I’ve been doing that for 30 years. Next month my son turns five, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. When I’m in America, I’m writing. When I’m in Israel? I’m an abba, which means father”.
He continued: “The idea of jumping on a voyage when they’re too young to understand it is not enticing to me. I kind of want to not do whatever movie I end up doing until my son is at least six. That way he’ll know what’s going on, he’ll be there, and it will be a memory for the rest of his life.”
While film production may be paused, he did talk about another creative endeavour he’s working on. “If you’re wondering what I’m doing right now, I’m writing a play, and it’s going to be probably the next thing I end up doing” he explained. “If it’s a fiasco I probably won’t turn it into a movie. But if it’s a smash hit? It might be my last movie”.
He confessed he found theatre more of a challenge than making films. A staunch supporter of the theatrical experience, he also went on a tirade against the current climate of films coming to streaming after a month.
“Well, what the fuck is a movie now?” he asked. “What — something that plays in theaters for a token release for four fucking weeks? All right, and by the second week you can watch it on television. I didn’t get into all this for diminishing returns. I mean, it was bad enough in ’97. It was bad enough in 2019, and that was the last fucking year of movies”.
Quentin Tarantino has lived in Israel since the birth of his son in 2020, having married Israeli singer Daniella Pick in 2018. He often stated that his 10th film will be his last – while he has had ten cinematic releases already, volumes one and two of Kill Bill are considered one project.
He remains vocal about his loves of movies, recently hitting back at the backlash he received for praising Joker: Folie à Deux, Elsewhere, the star of his 2012 film Django Unchained, Jamie Foxx, revealed how co-star Leonardo DiCaprio got over his struggles with the dialogue in the movie.
