Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk has given some hopeful news for fans hoping for a date for the third season of the hit show, saying it will be coming “sooner than you’d expect”.

Premiering in 2021, season one of Squid Game remains Netflix’s most watched series ever, becoming a worldwide hit and making an international star of Lee Jung-jae, who would go on to appear in Star Wars show The Acolyte.
Season two debuted on December 26, to the biggest ever premiere for a show on the streaming service, with 68million viewers in the first four days. The new season’s plot revolves around Jun-Jae’s character, Seong Gi-hun, infiltrating the latest edition of the deadly secret games in hopes of exposing those who are running it.

The end of the latest season gave a teaser for season three, sparking speculation as to when it will happen. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet of this year’s Golden Globes, Dong-hyuk said of season three’s release date: “I don’t think it’s May, but it will come out this year” before adding, “It’s coming, it’s coming. I’m working on it. It’s coming soon. Sooner than you’d expect”.

Squid Game would be nominated for Best Television Series – Drama at the Globes, eventually losing out to historical drama Shōgun. Season one won Best Supporting Actor – Drama for O Yeong-su’s performance, as well as winning six Emmys, the first non-English language television show to do so.
Fan discussions around Squid Game season two have also continued online. Viewers recently spotted a cameraman in shot, asking “how does stuff like this go unnoticed?”. A publicity stunt for the latest season also made the headlines when it didn’t quite go according to plan. Meanwhile, Dong-hyuk has compared the K-drama’s new season to Korea’s current political turmoil.
