Questlove, the multi-talented drummer of The Roots and cultural historian, is back in the director’s chair with two major new projects: documentaries on the enigmatic funk pioneer Sly Stone and the legendary sketch show Saturday Night Live. These mark Questlove’s first major film works since his critically acclaimed and award-winning debut, Summer of Soul.

A Legacy of Storytelling

Following the massive success of Summer of Soul, which unearthed and celebrated the long-lost Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969, Questlove is diving deeper into cultural storytelling. The Sly Stone documentary promises an intimate look at the life of one of music’s most complex and groundbreaking figures, while the SNL project offers a behind-the-scenes exploration of the show that has shaped American comedy and culture for nearly five decades.

But Questlove isn’t stopping there. In addition to these documentaries, he’s set to direct a remake of the classic Disney film The Aristocats, adding yet another layer to his impressive creative repertoire.

KMOB1003’s Take

Questlove is proving that his talents extend far beyond music. With Summer of Soul, he showed the world how storytelling could be both powerful and joyful. Now, with the Sly Stone and SNL documentaries, as well as a leap into Disney’s world with The Aristocats, Questlove is solidifying his place as a masterful storyteller across all mediums.
