The family of late director David Lynch has hit out at reports claiming to have details on the filmmaker’s memorial and funeral services.

Lynch’s death was announced by his family on social media earlier this month (January 16) – he was aged 78. Lynch, who is celebrated for films like Mulholland DriveBlue Velvet and the iconic TV series Twin Peaks, revealed his emphysema diagnosis last year, which was caused by smoking for most of his life. In November, he revealed he required supplemental oxygen to walk.

Last night, Lynch’s family took to Facebook to condemn a report claiming that the late film icon’s funeral service will be held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on January 28, and will include a “traditional memorial service”. The report also claimed that Lynch’s close friends and collaborators like Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern would be present at the service and “are anticipated to deliver eulogies”, adding that “a private burial ceremony will follow for family members only”.

Lynch’s family wrote, refuting the report: “Hopefully there will be some sort of memorial for David Lynch down the road, but right now there is no funeral or anything set on January 28th or any other time. I have heart that people are flying in for this, and I feel this is so wrong of someone to post this kind of crap. It’s hurtful. Please complain to whomever is posting these lies.”

His family added: “Also, no funeral has been held, so that story is also a pack of lies. DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ!!!! Complain about those who are posting lies just to get viewers. It’s really so sad to say.”
