John Mahama Sworn in at Black Star Square

Ghana’s political history witnessed a new chapter today, January 7, 2025, as His Excellency John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as the President of the Republic of Ghana.

 

The historic event, held at the Black Star Square in Accra, attracted a diverse audience, including African heads of state, party supporters, clergy, and notable figures from various spheres of life.

The swearing-in ceremony, which was characterized by vibrant cultural displays and military parades, saw dignitaries from across the African continent in attendance. Among them were the presidents of Nigeria, Botswana, and other African countries, who came to show solidarity with Ghana as it ushered in a new administration.

The ceremony began with the swearing-in of the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who took the Oath of Allegiance a few minutes before the President. Both oaths were administered by Ghana’s Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey, in accordance with the constitutional requirements.

Dressed in regal white with a touch of kente attire and accompanied by his wife, Lordina Mahama, the President pledged to serve the nation with dedication, integrity, and fairness. His oath was met with thunderous applause and cheers from the thousands gathered at the square.

The ceremony also saw the presence of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who attended with their respective wives. Their presence highlighted Ghana’s continued commitment to peaceful democratic transitions.

Members of Parliament, clergy, traditional leaders, celebrities, and party supporters from across the nation were also in attendance, filling the atmosphere with joy and enthusiasm.

The colorful ceremony, marked by the display of Ghanaian culture, served as a moment of unity for the nation. Party supporters adorned in vibrant outfits filled the square, waving flags and banners as a sign of support for the new administration.

The clergy, in their prayers, called for wisdom, strength, and guidance for the President and his team, while celebrities and cultural groups added to the vibrant atmosphere with music and dance performances.

In his inaugural address, President John Mahama expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their trust and pledged to focus on national development, economic stability, and unity. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among all citizens to build a prosperous future for the country.
