As at the time of writing this piece it was 16hrs shy of entereing into the new year. 2024 has been quite a year. As Ghanaians we were prepping to go to the polls, talkless of the economic hardships. But, through it all we have survived and to borrow a line from Travis Greene’s song which says “And we standing here only because you made a way”.
Regardless, there are some personalities who kept us going with their content and made huge influence in Ghanaian pop culture. These creatives distinguished themselves by putting in the work and staying consistent. Hence making it on my list.
I know this article will prick the minds of some people and will also make their opinions known on who to make the list and who not to. let me say your opinions are very welcomed.
So, in no particular order the number one person making the list is;
“Its King Paluta ey It’s King Paluta ey” Dude gave us top hits for 2024.
His hit songs include; Aseda, Makoma, “For the papping”/Apicki
These songs were and are still the life of the party, especially Aseda and Makoma. Then in the heat of the political stretch Apicki became the song. Paluta is the guy and I wish him well in 2025 Ghana Music Awards.
Next outstanding personality is;
Ara The Jay
This enigma just dropped from nowhere and gave us a hit with one of my favourite music acts Black Sheriff. “Jesus Christ 2” Ara is gradually building his repetoire for himself. He is destined for greatness.
Charlie Dior, i’m so sure alot of people will roll their eyes when they get to this part lol. i can imagine the number of people who will steup to this. Charlie has built a reputation as the fashion police of Ghana.
He built his brand criticzing the fashion choices of celebrities and influential people. The show has caught on so wild that per an episode it can record a 100K plus viewership. Looks like Ghanaians have bought the show with alot of Dollars and didn’t burn it.
Akonoba is one character whose meteoric rise was a shock to many. i read an article that said, the core of Akonoba”s content is to portray the character and behaviour of Ghanaian mothers. This he has done so well. His content storylines are so compelling that, we all find our mothers in each character. He shook the TL when in 2024 valentine’s Day he dressed as a woman making many question his sexuality and others calling for his cancel. Goodluck to his critics who have a huge job of trying to convincing 1.7 million followers on Tik Tok to cancel him.
Almed is famous for his Tantabara character and one who tells typical Zongo community stories. Almed is unapologetically himself and one who doesnt suffer fools gladly. Most of Almed’s content in 2024 got alot of tongues wagging. With over 1million followers on Tiktok i guess he has the right to be in y’all faces.
It’s urban, fresh, fast paced and it has a wide demographic listnership base. Sincerly Acca is one of Ghana’s most listened podcast. It is hosted by Joseph Nti and produced by Kwame Asante Ofori. The podcast’s topics range from an array of issues from navigating the Accra life, relationships, personal finance, pop culture, personality interviews amongst others. In 2022 the podcast got a grant from Spotify to produce more compelling content. It’s one of pop culture’s addition here in Ghana.
This lady is great at bringing stories to life. She tells relatable compound house stories, especially the ones that pertain in Kumasi households. She has an army of actors that she does the content with. Special mention to Asor Yaa, Peggy, Ben South and Kwaku Click. A story from Ama most times rake in almost hundred thousand likes and gains massive engagement. My wish for her is to get sponsors for her to do greater things.
She is new media sensation. Very popular on Snapchat. She raised eyebrows and got many eyeballs following her when in 2024 she appeared on the Delay Show, and gave a new twist to the carpentry trade by calling it “Joinery”. She also said she got attracted to money and the luxury life at a young age as a freshman student in Achimota School. Dulcie said, when she saw the cars parents of fellow student pulled up in, she asked herself why can’t this be my parent? This inspired her to be a self made successful business woman. Dulcie has a huge young fan base, dominant amongst them is the Gen Zs herself a baddie. She makes alot of money on the internet by influencing for brands. I’m told she’s got the “midas touch” everything she touch turns to gold. Last year she held the city on lockdown with huge vehicular traffic when she held a sale event called the Porials Pitch. “Accrarians” were livid by this but hey it is what it is!
“Abusua 3ntwam tie” for my non twi speakers simply means (friends do not skip…listen) has become very popular lately, all thanks to Oheneba Jude. If the saying “you can’t shame the shameless “ is a person then it has to be Jude. Coming from a culture where plus -size people are looked down on, intimidated and always asked to take several seats at the back. It takes a truckload of courage to always be in the faces of people with food in large portions. Jude has bore it all; the discouragement and the negativity. That not withstanding he still keeps showing up and has popularized the funny sound at the sight of food “mmmmm” Jude has indeed influenced culture and has comfortably made it on this list.
The issue went quiet. It didn’t end there in October (2024) he granted a controversial interview with a podcast and he got tongues wagging once again. Headucator is undergoing a gender transformation and most of his terms have become popular making him a pop culture sensation for 2024.
This is it…. These are the personalities who in 2024 made huge addition to pop culture. Let’s see if they keep the momentum.
As the caption said this piece focuses on 10 personalities. But I need to this, and give special mention to this lady
It was a struggle getting her real name. So let’s stick to calling her Food Diplomat. This lady has perfected the art of whetting our appetite.
She is good at her craft and has been the right source of information for many when it comes to dining at restaurants. Her reviews are honest and what you see is what you get.
Her outstanding job has earned her a list 100 Most Influential People in the African Food Industry 2023 by the African Food Network.
I personally followed her review and ordered Banku and “Totomanya” from an eatery that specializes in making authentic Voltarian dishes. The food ticked all the boxes.
Thanks for making time to read this piece. Some may disagree. It’s all good let’s keep the conversation going. Peace!!!!
