The highly anticipated second season of Netflix’s hit Korean thriller-survival series Squid Game released in full yesterday (December 26). Earlier this year, Netflix confirmed that the series is due to conclude with a third and final season, expected to arrive sometime in 2025.
Now, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has spoken about the upcoming final run of episodes, including when he thinks it will be announced and when he thinks it will be released.
In a new interview with Variety, Hwang said: “At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after Season two launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season three soon.”
As for when season three will likely premiere, Hwang said: “I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”
Season two of Squid Game scored a four-star review, with Nick Levine writing for NME: “With Squid Game‘s third and final season due next year, it’s hardly a spoiler to say there’s no clear resolution. But the final episode is still breathlessly exciting and chokingly emotional. You’ll be left gasping as Squid Game gets its tentacles around you and squeezes hard.”
Elsewhere, Hwang Dong-hyuk in November admitted that the reason he made a second season was “money”.
“Even though the first series was such a huge global success, honestly I didn’t make much,” Hwang said. “So doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too. And I didn’t fully finish the story.”
The writer-director also discussed how he lost “eight or nine” teeth from stress during the shooting of the first season, but admitted, “the stress I feel now is much greater,” given the show’s huge success.
