Minnesota, MN – Rising Minnesota rapper Lil Shine (real name Jasper William Johnson) has been hit with serious federal charges, including conspiracy and wire fraud, after allegedly hacking into the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) system to steal codeine prescriptions. Lil Shine, along with co-defendants Oscar Becerra-Ruiz and Raujaun Keon Varner, was charged in connection to a large-scale scheme involving the theft of medical data and illegal drug trafficking.
According to a HipHopDX report, the three men are accused of infiltrating the DEA’s practitioner and physician database between December 2022 and August 2023. They allegedly used the stolen data to set up fake customer accounts with pharmaceutical wholesalers and placed large orders for promethazine with codeine. The defendants are said to have ordered “at least” 300 pints of the drug, which is commonly abused for its high-codeine content.
The drugs were shipped to fraudulent doctor’s offices across the U.S., with the intent to sell them on the black market. Lil Shine and his co-defendants now face multiple charges, including conspiracy to acquire controlled substances, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
The case has shocked both the music and law enforcement communities, as Lil Shine was rapidly gaining traction in the underground rap scene before the charges were filed. The indictment raises questions about the intersection of digital crime, drug trafficking, and the music industry.
