The Apple TV+ series, which is led by Vince Vaughn, is based on the novel by Carl Hiaasen and follows former police detective turned restaurant inspector Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), who is pulled into a world of greed and corruption after a tourist finds a severed arm while fishing.
The supporting cast includes L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, and Jodie Turner-Smith.
The first two episodes of the series, which was developed by Bill Lawrence (Shrinking, Ted Lasso) were released on August 14, with the finale landing on October 9, 2024.
The novel spawned a sequel novel titled Razor Girl, but according to Variety, season two will not be based on that book.
“Since Bad Monkey first made its debut on Apple TV+, this highly entertaining series became an instant fan-favourite,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+.
“Led by the incomparable Vince Vaughn as Andrew Yancy, alongside a brilliant ensemble cast, we can’t wait for everyone to experience more hilarious, sun-soaked, beachy misadventures from the mind of Bill Lawrence as the temperature rises even further in the next chapter of this engrossing murder-mystery.”
It comes after Vaughn, recently expressed an interest in returning for more episodes. Speaking in an interview with Paul McGuire Grimes, the actor said “there’s always that possibility” for another season as there is a sequel novel, titled Razor Girl, which could be adapted.
“I think there would definitely be the possibility of another situation potentially,” he added.
Elsewhere, Vaughn recently offered his thoughts on why Hollywood no longer makes R-rated comedies like Wedding Crashers, Old School and Swingers.
“They just overthink it,” Vaughn said. “And it’s like, it’s crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, ‘You have to have an IP.’”
He added: “The people in charge don’t want to get fired, more so than they’re looking to do something great, so they want to kind of follow a set of rules that somehow get set in stone, that don’t really translate.
“But as long as they follow them, they’re not going to lose their job because they can say, ’Well, look, I made a movie off the board game Payday, so even though the movie didn’t work, you can’t let me go, right?’”
