The first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman is out – watch it below.

When the trailer begins, the iconic superhero is in a sticky situation, crash-landing somewhere cold and icy with his face bloody and bruised.

There are just two spoken lines in the trailer, which pays tribute to the classic Superman movies enjoyed by generations while also bringing the character into a fresh era. First, Superman whistles for his dog, Krypto, and says, simply, “Home – take me home,” to the trusty canine. Later on, a young boy lifts a makeshift flag into the air and says, “Superman, Superman.”

The home in question seems to be the Fortress of Solitude, with David Corenswet, who plays Superman, joking to ComicBook.com, “I’ll say this, you see in the trailer Krypto is dragging me through the snow. Do you think he’s gonna drag me through the snow all the way to Kansas?”

While filming mostly took place in the US – in Atlanta, Georgia, and Cleveland, Ohio, it moved to Norway to film scenes with Superman flying to the Fortress.

Gunn confirmed in October, meanwhile, that Krypto the Superdog, long a fan-favourite character, would make his live-action debut. Explaining that Krypto’s inclusion was inspired by his own dog, Ozu, who he adopted shortly after beginning work on the movie, he said: “Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.

“I remember thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog Month.”

Superman, or Clark Kent, has been around since 1939, and his motto, “Truth, Justice and the American Way” became synonymous with the DC icon. But in 2021, DC swapped it out for a new motto, “Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow.”

This is what Gunn, who shared the trailer on his own X (Twitter) account today (December 19) hopes the film to embody. When asked during a trailer launch event on Monday (December 16) how he incorporated what Superman represents for America and the world into the movie, he answered: “I think that’s what ‘Take me home’ is all about. We do have sort of a battered vision of Superman at the beginning, and I think that is our country.

“I believe in the goodness of human beings, and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs or their politics, are doing their best to get by and trying to be good people, despite what it may seem like for the other side, no matter what that other side might be.”

Superman, set for release on July 11, 2025, is the first movie in the new DC Universe, a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe that will have united continuity and story across live-action films, TV series, animation and video games, with any DC adaptations not fitting into this continuity being referred to as DC Elseworlds.

Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician) plays Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult are Lois Lane and Lex Luthor respectively. Also involved are the likes of Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion and Isabela Merced.
