A Malcolm In The Middle revival has been confirmed, with members of its main cast returning: Bryan Cranston, Frankie Muniz and Jane Kaczmarek.

Variety reported yesterday (December 13) that the classic 1990s sitcom is set to receive a new four-episode run under Disney+. A premiere date has yet to be announced.

The streaming platform made the announcement by sharing clips filmed by its returning cast. “I have been waiting for this moment for 18 years,” said Muniz. “Let’s find out where Malcolm and his family are now.”

Cranston, whose career had elevated to new heights after the sitcom with Breaking Bad, joked: “I’m so excited… that I may have peed. Just a little bit.” Meanwhile, Kaczmarek said: “What a delight that I’ll get to yell at that kid again!”

The official logline for the revival, per Variety, reads: “Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”

Talks about a Malcolm revival by Muniz and Cranston began since early 2023 – Muniz said in a podcast that “the creator of the show, Linwood Boomer, when we contacted him [about reviving the series], he was like, ‘I think it would be amazing, but I don’t want to do it’.”

In an interview with NME, Cranston shared a similar story, saying: “I can tell you that Linwood Boomer, the creator of Malcolm In The Middle, is interested in developing an idea for a rebooted series or a movie.”

“He won’t do it unless there’s a really, really good idea though. He won’t just do it so that everyone makes a paycheck. And I’m not interested in that either. I’m interested in what happened next. It’s 20 years since we last saw Malcolm! What are the family doing now?”

Last month, Muniz opened up in an interview about his years starring as Malcolm – the show ran for seven seasons from 2000 to 2006 – admitting that the sacrifices his family made for his career allowed him to keep working on the show.
