Path of Exile 2 has launched, well, sort of. The game has had a bunch of server issues and problems that have prevented players from jumping in. However, one key problem, “an unexpected disconnection occurred,” has been prevalent.

We have been playing the game ahead of launch and also suffered from this issue. Here is why it happens and if you can fix it.
The “an unexpected disconnection occurred” error in Path of Exile 2 occurs when the servers have been overloaded or have crashed completely. This can occur if connections are particularly unstable or if there are too many players joining a server, causing it to collapse in the process. There isn’t anything you can do to fix the error. Simply restart the game and hope that you log in once again.
This is happening currently ahead of launch as the servers aren’t live yet or are still being tinkered with. The official Path of Exile X account is providing updates on the state of the game’s servers consistently. More than 1 million players have signed up for early access, and Grinding Gear Games has said they did not expect so much interest.
So, expect many issues over the launch weekend and week, including queues when logging in.
After launch week, this error should fade away and not pop up too often. There is still a chance that it could be a problem during updates and when the game sees a spike of players. But we will be updating this article if the issue becomes a major problem again during early access.
