The original PlayStation was released in 1994 and was the first console to ship over 100million units. A number of now-classic games also launched on the PS1, making use of it’s janky, low-res 3D graphics.
Graphic artist FersetiD has spent the past few months recreating scenes from iconic Hollywood blockbusters in the style of a PS1-era game. These include Jack Nicholson breaking down the door with an axe in The Shining, Sylvester Stallone’s champ-in-training running up the stairs from the 1976 Rocky and Christian Bale’s Patrick Bateman vibing to music in American Psycho.
The likes of Taxi Driver, Donnie Darko, Joker, The Matrix and Fight Club have also been given the PS1 treatment. As well as Instagram, Ferseti has been sharing their creations on YouTube and TikTok, where they’ve racked up over 500,000 likes. Meanwhile a compilation shared by digital museum Welcome.Jpeg has been liked almost 200,000 times.
The remakes come as Sony is gearing up to celebrate PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. The studio has already released a limited-edition throwback variant of their shiny new PlayStation 5 Pro console.
“We believe the beginning of our journey is an important part of our history at Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is why we are honouring this moment by bringing the original PlayStation design theme into the latest products for PS5 to commemorate the last 30 years,” the company said in a blog post.
“As we look ahead to the future, we will continue to innovate as technology evolves, so you can enjoy each memorable moment in your continued journey with PlayStation.” Fans are also expecting digital celebrations to be revealed in the coming weeks.
