The director made a surprise appearance alongside the film’s lead stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington at D23, the biennial convention for members of the official Disney fan club, in California on Friday (August 9).

Cameron told a 12,000-strong audience the title for the new film is Avatar: Fire And Ash.

The third film is set for release on December 19 2025, following 2009’s Avatar and sequel Avatar: The Way Of Water, which was released in 2022.

“The new film is not what you expect, but definitely what you want,” Cameron said.

He went on to say it was “too soon” to share footage but let the audience look at “cool concept art” which featured characters in the sky surrounded by fire.

Cameron added: “There are new cultures and settings and creatures, and new biomes. You will see a lot more of Pandora, the planet, that you’ve never seen before.”

It comes after Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider recently revealed there was a nine-hour long director’s cut of the forthcoming sequel and it could be turned into a limited Disney+ series.

“Months ago, I put out a rumour about James Cameron having a nine-hour cut of ‘Avatar 3’ that he wanted to finish the visual effects for,” Sneider previously said.

“A lot of people were like, ‘Why would the studio pay for that? Why would he insist on doing visual effects if then he’s gonna cut the movie?’ The idea is that Cameron would do all the visual effects for his nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 and then release it on Disney+ as a limited series after the theatrical cut is released.”

Sneider, however, did caution that the plan could potentially change.

Two sequels are set to follow, which are due for release in 2026 and 2028 respectively.
