Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth lead the latest Mad Max film, Furiosa.

Directed by George Miller, Furiosa serves as a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. It’s the fifth instalment in the franchise overall, which began with the original Mad Max way back in 1979.

This latest entry stars Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa, who was played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Other cast members include Alyla Browne, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, Nathan Jones, and Josh Helman.

Along with directing Furiosa, Miller has co-written the story with his former Fury Road collaborator Nico Lathouris.

Are there plans for another Mad Max film after Furiosa?

While nothing has been officially announced, George Miller expressed interest in returning to the franchise at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.

“There’s certainly more stories there,” Miller said (via Deadline) when asked about whether there’s more Mad Max movies on the horizon.

He clarified, however, that the future of the series will depend on how well Furiosa performs at the box office. “I’ll definitely see how this goes,” he added.

Could it be another prequel?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Miller said a story has been written about Mad Max set one year prior to events in Fury Road, which he hopes to eventually do something with in some capacity.

“In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him [in that film],” Miller said. “And as we get towards the end of this movie [Furiosa], the chronology… Basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened.

“The writers know what happened to Mad Max in that year before, and we have a whole story of that, which I would like to do sometime if I get the chance.”
