The moment took place at the second of the singer’s three performances in Sweden last week, which also happened to mark the 89th show as part of her record-breaking ‘Eras’ tour.
For Swift, the number 89 has some significance – not only is 1989 the year that she was born, but it also marks the title of her hit fifth album which she shared in 2014. So, to celebrate the occasion in Sweden, the pop legend threw in some surprises during the set.
They took place as Swift launched into the surprise song section of the live show, which usually sees her play two songs that aren’t usually in the setlist. For the second show in Stockholm, however, she treated the crowd to four tracks.
The first was the debut of ‘Guilty As Sin?’ – a track from her latest album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, which was played live for the first time.
“Welcome to the acoustic session,” she said before launching into the song (via Rolling Stone). “When we’re doing a concert like this, it just doesn’t, it doesn’t feel like we’re even exerting any energy, because you just fuel us the entire night.
“Thank you for being this kind of crowd. You know it just, it makes me want to play one of my favourite songs from ‘Tortured Poets’ that I’ve never played live before,” she added. Find footage of the rendition below.
It was from there that Swift delivered yet another surprise for the audience – breaking into a mashup of three songs from the ‘1989’ album to mark the 89th show.
“It’s crazy because it really does feel like the beginning of the tour,” Swift said while sitting at a piano. “But this is actually our 89th show.” From there, she went on to perform a hybrid of ‘Say Don’t Go’ – taken from the Vault version of the album – as well as ‘1989’s ‘Welcome to New York’ and ‘Clean’.
The surprises in the setlist were also seen the following night, as Swift wrapped up the final of her three shows in the city and broke out the first ever rendition of ‘How Did It End?’.
Swift will continue to play shows across Europe, and will be heading to the UK and Ireland in June. This will include eight shows at Wembley Stadium in London this summer as part of the run, with support coming from Paramore.
Her concerts are expected to boost the UK economy by a reported £1billion. Though most of the money will most likely go on accommodation, tickets, transport and merchandise, it is estimated that one in five of the 1.1million ticketholders for the singer’s 15 UK dates across June and August will purchase new outfits specifically for the concerts.
