“I don’t want to get super-dark, I was getting bullied so bad that I was thinking about killing myself,” Doechii revealed. But at her lowest moment, she had a life-changing realization: “And then I was like, ‘Fk that!’ Fk that sh*t! I’m not going for that!’ And this wash of peace came over me, and I received ‘I am her.’”
That moment became a turning point, helping Doechii see herself as the main character of her own story. “I was more like this feeling of — ‘I made a choice, a decision,’” she explained. “I am the most important character in this movie. This is my motherf**king movie.”
Now, the Florida native is celebrating the best year of her life. Her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal earned widespread praise, and she made history by winning the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, becoming only the second female solo artist and third woman ever to take home the honor.
