The South got something to say—and now the world is finally listening! The legendary duo OutKast has officially been nominated for the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, marking a historic moment in hip-hop culture.

OutKast Secures Their Spot in Music History

On Wednesday (Feb. 12), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced its 14 nominees, with André 3000 & Big Boi standing as the ONLY hip-hop act on the list. Despite being one of the most influential rap duos of all time, this marks the first-ever nomination for the ATLiens.

Rock Hall Chairman John Sykes recognized the impact of all the nominees, stating:

“These remarkable Nominees have each created their own musical style and attitude, impacting generations of music lovers and contributing to the ever-evolving sounds and continued growth of rock & roll.”

Why OutKast Deserves This Honor

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame eligibility rule requires artists to have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years ago. OutKast’s groundbreaking debut single “Player’s Ball” dropped in 1993, followed by their classic debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, in 1994.

Since then, OutKast has redefined hip-hop, blending Southern rap, funk, jazz, and rock influences, winning six Grammy Awards, and delivering iconic albums like Aquemini, Stankonia, and the record-breaking Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

OutKast’s Impact & Legacy

With OutKast’s impact on hip-hop and beyond, it’s about time they were nominated. The rap group has released six albums, including their critically acclaimed 2000 LP Stankonia and 2003 effort Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Their diamond-certified hit “Hey Ya!” brought the worlds of electro-funk and soul together.

Tracks like “Ms. Jackson,” “So Fresh, So Clean,” and “Roses” are among their multi-platinum hits, showcasing flawless lyrical skill and their colorful Dirty South energy. They’ve become arguably the best hip-hop group to emerge from the South.

How the Rock Hall Voting Works

Rock Hall nominees will be voted on by a panel of over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals. Criteria for selection include an artist’s impact on music culture, influence on future musicians, and the scope and longevity of their career and body of work.

The 2025 Performer Inductees will be announced in late April, alongside honorees in three special categories:

  • Musical Influence
  • Musical Excellence
  • The Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award

The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place in Los Angeles in the fall (official date TBA).

Last year, A Tribe Called Quest and Eric B. & Rakim were nominated, with ATCQ earning official induction in 2024.
