KFC has announced that it has created a new bucket lid that also doubles as a playable vinyl record.

The popularity of vinyl has been on the rise in recent years. Back in April, for instance, it was confirmed that vinyl sales enjoyed their highest weekly total sales in three decades, and later in the summer it was announced that sales of physical music on the whole were on track to see their first increase in two decades, following years of being overshadowed by streaming.

Now, it seems that fast food chain KFC has gotten involved in the trend, and announced that it is giving away bucked lids that double as a playable vinyl.

It announced the update in a new social media post, where it showed an image of the new invention and confirmed that each comes with a collection of ‘Kentucky Fried Carols’. Made exclusively for Christmas 2024, the songs featured include festive classics like ‘Deck The Halls’, ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’ and ‘Jungle Bells.

According to the brand, the design is made from the same paper lids it uses on its regular buckets of chicken, however, the new versions have been covered in a vinyl coating and etched.

“We transformed our iconic bucket to make the lid a playable record,” read the caption in the Instagram post. “Set the holiday mood with Finger Lickin’ Good food and music all at once.”

Only 10 of the vinyl bucket tops have been made, and those interested can take part in a contest to win one of the rare copies by visiting the KFC Canada Instagram page. Only residents in Canada are able to apply, and the chain has not yet shared any details of the vinyl lids arriving in other countries.

As highlighted by Loudwire, this surprisingly isn’t the first time that a major fast food chain has gotten involved in making physical copies of music as part of a campaign. Back in 2018, Vice revisited the 1988 promotion held by McDonald’s in which they printed 80million flexi discs that gave customers the chance to win $1million.

Unlike the KFC edition, which plays Christmas tracks, the McDonald’s version played the ‘Menu Song’ – which contained lyrics that recited every item McDonald’s sold at the time.

The popularity of vinyl has continued throughout this year too and led to physical copies being more prominent on the UK high streets. WHSmith, for example, announced back in October that it will be selling vinyl records again for the first time in three decades, and NME reported that classic UK music shop Our Price was set to relaunch 20 years after it closed.
