College hoops are back, y’all! Last night was the official tip-off of the men’s college basketball season, and let me tell you—there were some real standout performances, as well as a few teams that might want a redo. Let’s break down the opening night vibes with the winners and losers from across the NCAA!
Winners
1. Kansas Jayhawks The Jayhawks came out with the swagger of a top contender, easily dispatching their opponent and proving why they deserve that preseason No. 1 ranking. The big story? Their new star freshman lived up to all the hype, dropping 22 points and making it look effortless. The team chemistry was on point, and if this is any sign of things to come, Kansas is going to be a problem this year!
2. Duke Blue Devils Duke had themselves a night. With their veterans taking charge and the new recruits bringing that fresh energy, the Blue Devils controlled both ends of the court. They played lockdown defense, and their offensive rhythm was smooth like butter. Coach Scheyer has his squad clicking early, and it looks like they’re ready to run it back and make a deep March run.
3. Under-the-Radar Teams Shoutout to the smaller programs who made some noise! The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers and the Richmond Spiders each pulled off solid wins against Power Five opponents. Loyola is back at it with their classic “never-say-die” attitude, and Richmond’s guard play looked impressive, causing some early-season upsets.
Losers
1. Kentucky Wildcats Kentucky’s opening night didn’t exactly go as planned. Despite having a roster loaded with talent, they struggled to find their rhythm and fell short to a much lesser-ranked team. The Wildcats need to figure out their offensive chemistry—fast—if they want to avoid early panic buttons.
2. Michigan State Spartans Michigan State took an unexpected L at home, which stung a little extra for the Spartan faithful. The Spartans couldn’t seem to get it going from beyond the arc, and their defense had too many lapses. Coach Izzo has his work cut out for him after this shaky start.
3. Injuries Stealing the Spotlight Unfortunately, a few key injuries put a damper on the opening night excitement. Preseason Player of the Year candidate from UConn went down with a leg injury, and everyone’s holding their breath for updates. Injuries are part of the game, but it’s always tough to see star players sidelined before the season even gets rolling.
The Energy is Real! Opening night was packed with intensity, excitement, and the kind of atmosphere only college basketball can bring. Whether your team took home a dub or needs to regroup, one thing’s for sure: this season is going to be wild!
